Why We Invested 3 Years and ₹1.4 Crore in Professional Background Verification
Because letting a stranger inside your home or factory is not a trivial decision. This is the story of how we built the strictest verification process in the Coimbatore and Tiruppur home services industry.
In 2022, during our first full year of operations in Coimbatore, we made a painful discovery. Two independent painters we had onboarded based on simple phone references were involved in a petty theft at a Race Course villa. We handled the situation — compensated the customer, provided all documents to the police, and terminated both people — but the incident kept us awake at night. If we had just spent a few thousand rupees more on proper police verification and personal interviews, a customer would never have felt violated in their own home. That single incident became the genesis of our 7-layer verification process, which we rolled out company-wide in January 2023 and have refined every quarter since.
Today, Working Class operates the strictest professional verification system of any home services platform operating in Coimbatore or Tiruppur. We have a dedicated 4-member internal Safety and Compliance team based in our RS Puram head office, whose only daily job is verification, re-verification, and incident escalation. They are not part of the operations or sales teams — they report directly to the founder and have the authority to terminate any professional with zero need for approval from any other department. We also work on a formal MOU with three separate police verification agencies: one in Coimbatore Central, one in Peelamedu, and one in Tiruppur SIDCO, who handle our mandatory document submissions within 72 hours of any onboarding request.
The numbers tell the real story. Before our 7-layer system was introduced, we had 6 substantiated theft or behaviour complaints per 10,000 bookings. Today, after 3 years of operating the full process across 140,000+ completed bookings, that number stands at 0.29 per 10,000 — a 20.6x reduction. The three incidents we did have in 2025 were all handled with full police coordination, 100% insurance reimbursement, and customer written feedback confirming satisfaction with our response. Only 30% of applicants who start the onboarding process actually make it through the full 7 layers. The other 70% fail somewhere — criminal record, fake address proof, negative personal references, or simply refusing to sign the mandatory personal surety bond. We would rather reject 9 good people than let 1 bad person through.
And verification does not stop at onboarding. We run a complete re-verification cycle — including a fresh police check — every 12 months for every single active professional. Additionally, anyone who falls below a 4.4-star aggregated customer rating for two consecutive months, or who receives a single substantiated complaint of rude behaviour or property damage, is automatically flagged for an immediate mid-cycle verification and safety review. We also conduct random breath analyser tests at morning sign-in across all four of our zonal hubs. Trust is something you earn, not something you buy once with a certificate and then forget about.
