10 signs your home electrical wiring needs immediate attention
✍️ Karthik R. 📅 April 5, 2026 ⏱ 5 min read

Electrical problems are one of the leading causes of house fires in India. The tricky part? Most of them start silently — a loose wire here, an overloaded circuit there — and by the time you notice something is wrong, the damage may already be done.

1. Lights that flicker or dim

If your lights flicker when you turn on a large appliance like a washing machine or AC, it usually means the circuit is overloaded. A licensed electrician can add a dedicated circuit for high-draw appliances.

2. Breakers that trip frequently

A circuit breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job. One that trips every week is telling you something is wrong — either the circuit is overloaded or there's a fault in the wiring.

3. Burning smell or discoloured outlets

A burning smell near an outlet or switch is a serious warning sign. Turn off the circuit immediately and call a professional. Discolouration around outlets usually means arcing — electricity jumping across a gap — which can ignite surrounding materials.

4. Outlets that feel warm or spark

Outlets should never feel warm to the touch. If they do, there's likely a wiring problem behind the wall. A small spark when you plug something in is normal, but a large spark or one that lingers is not.

5. Old wiring (pre-2000 homes)

Homes built before 2000 may have aluminium wiring or outdated insulation that degrades over time. If your home hasn't had an electrical inspection in the last 10 years, it's worth booking one.

Bottom line: Electrical issues are not DIY territory. If you notice any of these signs, book a verified electrician through Working Class. Our professionals are licensed, insured, and available same-day.
